OSAO Digital power plant
Challenge
- An inspiring way for students to get acquainted with the operation of a power plant, its structural components, and the phenomena related to them, as well as an opportunity to immerse themselves in the facility before transitioning to the real environment.
Solution
-
The Digital power plant implemented for Educational Consortium OSAO serves as support for teacher-led theoretical instruction as well as simulator-based teaching, offering a comprehensive overview of the power plant in two different scales: The basic user interface of the virtual environment is a miniature model view, where the power plant is examined at a 1:40 scale. This allows easy comprehension of the various components and their interrelationships within the large facility. If the user wishes to explore an individual component in more detail, they can transition inside the facility to a 1:1 scale, where real proportions and details also become familiar.
The goal of the virtual model is to visualize theoretical knowledge in a real-like environment, thereby enabling the integration of theory into the correct context. This way, theoretical knowledge becomes enriched into experiential knowledge, enhancing and making learning more comprehensive.
The virtual learning environment seen in the video was implemented as part of the EAKR-funded Digivoimala-project. The development work is ongoing.
